Lady Knights Win Final Match at Nassau Invite!

Warwick, R.I. – July 16, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY for a Tri-Match Invite. The Lady Knights lost their first match to the hosting Lions of Nassau CC 0-3. They then lost 1-3 to the Bulldogs of Bergen CC. However, they rallied to win their final match of the day 3-1 versus the Bears of Harcum College. The Lady Knights begin the season 1-2.

CCRI vs Nassau (0-3): 10-25, 17-25 and 18-25

The Lady Knights served-up their first match of the season versus the Lions of Nassau CC who were hosting the tri-match invitational. The Lions of NCC had won their first match of the season earlier in the week and were looking to keep their win streak alive whereas the Lady Knights were just trying to get their bearings and establish a winning streak of their own. Unfortunately for CCRI the Lions roared while the Lady Knights learned from their first match and will look to reverse their fate vs Bergen CC in their next match. Freshman Yoeliz Serrano Vargas (Providence, RI) led the way with four kills and a sol block, followed by fellow freshman Danielle D'Andrea (Lincoln, RI) who had three kills and two aces. Also helping CCRI was sophomore Samantha Elkas (Cumberland, RI) who had three kills and a solo block and sophomore Ivelisse Serrano Vargas (Providence, RI) added three kills.

CCRI vs Bergen (1-3): 26-24, 20-25, 19-25 and 16-25

In their second match of the day the Lady Knights faced the Bulldogs of Bergen CC. the Lady Knights played much better in this match taking set one in dramatic fashion 26-24 but Bergen battled back to take the match 3-1. CCRI showed much improvement from their first match but still came out on the losing end. Leading the way in the second match for the Lady Knights was Danielle D'Andrea with five kills and three aces. Also helping CCRI were the Serrano Vargas sisters with sophomore Ivelisse delivering five kills and two aces and Freshman Yoeliz adding a team leading six kills with an ace.

CCRI vs Harcum (3-1): 23-25, 25-11, 25-22 and 25-13

In their final match of the day the Lady Knights faced the Bears of Harcum College, a team they have a strong history with. CCRI beat the Bears in the 2016 District Tournament while Harcum returned the favor last year when they defeated CCRI in the Districts. The Bears took set 1 25-23 but CCRI rallied to win the final three sets in dominating fashion to earn their first match victory of the year. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Yoeliz Serrano Vargas with six kills, three aces and three solo blocks. Ivelisse Serrano Vargas was also a huge factor in this victory with five kills and four aces and Samantha Elkas had three kills, three aces and a solo block. Rounding out the attack for CCRI was Manuela Restrepo (Central Falls, RI) had three kills and three aces and Danielle D'Andrea added two kills and three aces.

The next matches for the Lady Knights will be Saturday September 1st when they travel to Howard Community College in Columbia, MD for the Dragon Invite. They will face the Flyers of Sandhills CC (NC) at 11am and the hosting Dragons of Howard CC at 3pm.
