Lady Knights Split Matches Day 1 of Dragon Invite!

Warwick, R.I. – September 4, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights women's volleyball team traveled to Howard Community College in Columbia, MD over the weekend to compete in the Dragon Invitational. In their first match the Lady Knights faced the Sandhills Community College from Pinehurst, NC and lost 3-0 in the second match CCRI bounced back to beat the Dragons of Howard Community College 3-0 to end day 1 of the Dragon Invitational 1-1

Match 1: CCRI- 0 Sandhills CC- 3: 15-25, 11-25 and 13-25

In their first match of the Dragon Invite the Lady Knights faced the Flyers of Sandhills Community College but did not fair too well as the Flyers never allowed CCRI to score more than 15 points in any set to win the match three sets to none. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman Yoeliz Serrano Vargas (Providence, RI) with four Kills for the match. Sophomore Ivelisse Serrano Vargas (Providence, RI) also had a good match with two Kills and a solo block and Sophomore Samantha Elkas (Cumberland, RI) added three Kills to the CCRI attack. The Lady Knights will look to get on track when the face the host Howard Community College in their second match of the Dragon Invite.

Match 2: CCRI- 3 Howard CC- 0: 25-16, 25-11 and 25-16

In their second match CCRI faced the Dragons of Howard CC and fared much better winning n in three straight sets. It was CCRI's turn to hold their opponent to low scores throughout the match, never allowing Howard to score more than 16 points in any set. The Lady Knights were led by Ivelisse Serrano Vargas with eight Kills and six Aces accounting for 14 total points while adding four Digs. Yoeliz Serrano Vargas had seven Kills and a Solo Block for eight total points in the match and Paola Almarante (Woonsocket, RI) also had an excellent match with eight Aces and a team-high five Digs. Also helping CCRI was Setter Danielle D'Andrea (Lincoln, RI) who orchestrated the entire CCRI offense with 24 Assists and three Digs for the match.

The Lady Knights will face Harford Community College from Bel Air, MD at 9am to see if they will be placed in the Gold or Silver Bracket.
