Warwick, R.I. – October 24, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team hosted the CCRI Volleyball Northern Invitational inviting Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), Lackawanna College, MassBay Community College and Frederick Community College to the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln, RI. The Lady Knights defeated BHCC 3-0, Lackawanna College 3-0, MassBay 3-0 but fell to Frederick 3-0. With the 3-1 record at the Lady Knights improved to 21-8 on the season and 6-0 in Region XXI play.

Lady Knights defeat BHCC (3-0): 25-18, 25-12 & 25-10

The Lady Knights’ Northern Invite started off with a familiar foe in Bunker Hill CC from

Charlestown, MA. The Bulldogs have shown improvement over the season but still couldn’t handle the serving and offense of the Lady Knights. Co-Captain Dahlia Rafael-Tirado (Providence, RI) led the serving attack with six Aces and added two kills and 26 assists. Sam Elkas (Cumberland, RI) had three aces, two blocks, and a kill. Tara Watters (West Warwick, RI) had two aces of her own and an outstanding 14 kills hitting at an impressive 40% clip. Co-Captain Megan Johns (Oakland, RI) had five kills and two blocks to round out the great start to the tournament for CCRI.

Lady Knights defeat Lackawanna (3-0): 25-20, 25-19 & 25-20

This was an important match for CCRI due to the fact that Lackawanna (PA) comes out of Region XIX and is similar competition to what CCRI could see at Districts. The Lady Knights came out firing on all cylinders and swept Lackawanna. Roselyn Vasquez (Providence, RI) had a great game with 10 kills and six digs, and two aces. Tara Watters had 11 kills, three aces, and a team leading 22 digs! Dahlia Tirado directed the attack with 27 assists while adding a kill and a block as well.

Lady Knights defeat Mass Bay CC (3-0): 25-2, 25-2 & 25-3

Being a new program, MassBay CC from Fall River, MA had a very difficult time dealing with the overall game of the Lady Knights. Trying to work on a few things in preparation for Districts, our serving one of them and it paid off with 41 Aces in the match! Dahlia Tirado had seven aces with only 14 assists due to CCRI’s dominant serving efforts. Sam Elkas supplied most of the offense with five kills and five aces. Tara Watters had a team and season-high 12 aces with four kills. Roselyn Vasquez added four aces and four kills. Emily Stengel (Cumberland, RI) tied Tirado with seven aces while Shannon Moran (North Smithfield, RI) had four aces and Ivelisse Serrano (Providence, RI) added two Aces to the Lady Knights’ effort.

Lady Knights fall to Frederick College (0-3): 20-25, 20-25 & 19-25

After the three matches played and dealing with a sickness on the team, Frederick (MD) proved to be just a little too much for CCRI to overcome with a fairly dominant outside hitter. This was still an exciting match with Dahlia Tirado having 22 assists, an ace, and two kills. Shannon Moran had two blocks and a kill. Sam Elkas had five kills and four blocks while Tara Watters added seven kills and 10 digs.

CCRI Head Coach Will Amaral beamed after the Invite: “Going 3-1 isn’t a terrible way to finish the regular season! The girls fought hard all day and even though they could have beat Frederick, if they stuck with the game plan, I’m happy with their fight. Now it’s time to rest and prepare for Districts!”

The Lady Knights will now set their focus on the District L Tournament the weekend of November 4th-5th hosted by the Region XIX Champion which has yet to be determined.
