Lady Knights Soccer hires McGirr as Head Coach

Warwick, R.I. – March 24, 2017:  The CCRI Department of Athletics has hired James McGirr as the new Head Coach of the Lady Knights Soccer Program beginning in 2017.  McGirr takes over for Dennis Grassini who was the Head Coach of the Lady Knights for 18 years and had been with the program since its inception in 1994.

McGirr comes to CCRI with 17 years of Division I NCAA collegiate coaching experience with excellent results.  Some of the excellent programs he worked for included: Providence College, University of Rhode Island, Villanova University, Rutgers University Loyola University (MD) and Lafayette College.  Most recently he served as an assistant coach at Loyola University where he was in-charge of recruiting and was responsible for organizing and coaching in-season daily training, functional training, team strategy and match preparation. He also helped with education and preparation through video analysis.  While at Loyola the Greyhounds were a 2014 Patriot League quarterfinalist and 2015 semifinalist. Before Loyola he was a volunteer assistant at the University of Rhode Island for a year.  Before URI McGirr was the Head Coach for the Providence College women’s program for eight years.  While at PC he trained and developed five different Big East All-Conference players and in 2011 the team was a Big East quarterfinalist.  Another big accomplishment at PC was earning the NCAA Public Recognition Award a women’s soccer academic award in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In addition, to the awards he achieved a 100% graduation rate through mandatory team study halls and weekly academic player meetings. 

In addition to his excellent collegiate track record he also has an extensive Club soccer background with over 20 years of experience.  For the past two years he has coached the New England Futbol Club (NEFC) as Head Coach of the U13 and U15 girls and U14 boys teams as well as being assistant administrator who organized and coordinated all holiday soccer clinics. He has also served as a Head Coach of the Elite Clubs National League as Head Coach & Trainer of the Scorpions Soccer Club from 2011 to 2013. Before that he was on the Regional Staff as Coach and Trainer of the Rhode Island Olympic Development Program from 2006 to 2009.  

McGirr was a defender on the soccer team at Division I Rider College in New Jersey where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1992. He earned his Premier Diploma from the National soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and is licensed in United Soccer Federation “B”.  McGirr resides in Smithfield with his wife Erin whom also has an athletic background as a former two-sport athlete at Rutgers University in track and soccer. He works for the New England Futbol Club and enjoys boating and golfing in his free time.
