Warwick, R.I. – September 25, 2015: The CCRI women’s soccer team traveled to Holyoke, MA yesterday to take on the Lady Cougars of Holyoke Community College who are currently ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll. The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Cougars 2-0. With the victory CCRI improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Region XXI play.
After a scoreless first half the Lady Knights really poured on the pressure in the second half of play. In the 12th minute of play CCRI finally broke the ice as freshman Forward Faithe Fernandez (North Providence, RI) took a pass from freshman midfielder/forward Emma Manosh (Warwick, RI) and scored on the Holyoke Goalkeeper Megan Zabik. As play continued the Lady Knights sustained the pressure on the Holyoke defense. In the 30th minute of the half freshman Forward Elizabeth Gemmell (Warwick, RI) scored the Lady Knights second goal of the match. Gemmell took a pass in close from Emma Manosh and placed the ball along the ground to the far corner of the net giving CCRI a commanding 2-0 lead.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashley VanBemmelen (North Providence, RI) recorded her second shutout victory of the season. The CCRI defensive corps was outstanding with sophomore Co-Captain Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) leading the way along with freshman Kaitlin Murrin(Norton, MA), freshman Natalie Gallucci (Coventry, RI), and sophomore Ricki Beaufort (Warwick, RI). Freshman Emma Manosh recorded two assists on the day and freshman forward Faithe Fernandez recorded her second game winning goal in the last three games. The Lady Knights are now ranked No. 16 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) national poll.
CCRI’s next game will be home this Sunday at the Lincoln Soccer Complex at 1:00pm as they take on Essex County College of New Jersey.
