Warwick, R.I. – January 11, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team completed their play in the 2016 CCRI basketball Invitational on Sunday by playing the Cougars of Genesee Community College from Batavia, NY. The Lady Knights lost to the Cougars 68-57. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 10-11 on the season.
The Lady Knights looked to be in for what could have been an easier game after beating Genesee 76-50 at the Genesee Cougar Holiday Classic in Batavia in December. However, the Cougars had other plans and came out playing with tremendous enthusiasm and determination while the Lady Knights seemed flat and never got out of first gear. The Lady Knights did jump out to a 10-4 lead but the Cougars were able to close the gap to just three points by the end of the quarter when it ended with the score 15-12 CCRI. In the second quarter Genesee kicked it into another gear and outscored the Lady Knights 17-13. The Cougars were paced by forward Karly Fanning who led all scorers with 15 first half points to give Genesee the 29-28 halftime lead. In the third quarter both teams battled back and forth with no team gaining a clear advantage but Genesee still holding onto a two point lead with the score 47-45 going into the final quarter. Unfortunately for the Lady Knights Genesee closed out the game with their best quarter getting six points from Fanning and nine from Brionna Blocker to pull away from CCRI and win by the final count of 68-57.
Leading the way for CCRI was double-double machine Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY) who charted her 16th double-double scoring 18 points while ripping down 17 rebounds. Harden is putting together a tremendous season statistically and is ranked in the top 50 in multiple categories: ranked second in made field goals with 161, 18th in FG% at 56.3%, first in offensive rebounds with 104 and second in defensive rebounds with 156 and second in total rebounds with 260 and 9th in Rebounds per game with 12.4 and lastly ranked 35th in points per game with 17.7 points.
