Warwick, R.I. – February 18, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Bulldogs of Dean College from Franklin, MA on Wednesday evening. The Lady Knights lost 84-61. With the loss CCRI falls to 14-16 on the season and 5-6 in Region XXI play and 0-2 in their league of Division II Region XXI. The Lady Knights donned Pink warm-ups and accessories for their annual “Play 4 Kay” Pink Out and also celebrating Sophomore Day for their final home game of the season.
The Lady Knights were looking to even their Division II Region XXI record with a defeat of Dean after falling to them 64-54 in mid-November. Unfortunately CCRI was behind early in the game as Dean jumped out to a quick 11-3 advantage which they extended to nine points 22-13 by the end of the first quarter. CCRI cut into the lead in the second quarter scoring the first five points on a 3-poointer form Alexis Antonacci (Plainview, NY) and two free throws from Lyric Artis (Albany, NY). The Lady Knights kept playing great defense to continue to cut into the lead which they shaved to just one point 23-22 on a basket from Ashley Correa (Providence, RI). Dean was able to close the quarter with an 11-5 run to take a 34-27 lead into the halftime break.
Dean came out with high intensity to begin the second half and was able to extend the lead quickly will full-court pressure and a fast-break tempo to go ahead 56-42 by the end of the third quarter. But the Lady Knights did not quit. Though playing a bit shorthanded and having two players with four fouls CCRI was able to dig deep and once again cut into the Bulldogs’ lead. Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY) scored six of the Lady Knights eight points to begin the fourth quarter as they cut Dean’s lead to eight points 58-50 just three minutes into the final frame. But as quickly as the Lady Knights cut into the lead, two minutes later, they found themselves trailing by 20 points 70-50 with about five minutes left in the game form there Dean was able to salt away the victory by the final count of 84-61.
Leading the way 23rd double-double in 30 games was Kennethah Harden scoring a team-high 25 points to go with 11 rebounds, three steals, an assist and a blocked shot. So far in her freshman campaign Harden has made an indelible mark on the CCRI record book with a single season record 380 rebounds while also climbing to No. 20 on the CCRI All-time scoring list with 558 career points just ahead of Debbie Allen (551) and behind Sara Duskiewicz (591). Also helping CCRI was Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) scoring nine points with six rebounds, two assist and a steal and Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) with eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal. Rounding out the top performers for CCRI was Alexis Antonacci with eight points, including two 3-pointers with six assists and two steals and Lyric Artis added seven points, three assists, two rebounds and a blocked shot.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be in the Region XV/XXI Tournament the weekend of February 27th and 28th at Orange County Community College (OCCC) in Middletown, NY. Monroe is the top seed and earned the right to host but their facility is booked so it will be at the other Region XV school OCCC.
The seeding for the Tournament is as follows: #1 Dean (19-4 overall, 5-1 in region);
#2 CCRI (14-16* overall, 3-3 in region) (*win tiebreaker based on overall record); #3 Monroe (9-18 overall, 3-3 in region); and #4 Orange (13-13 overall, 1-5 in region)
