Warwick, R.I. – February 12, 2016: The CCRI Knights basketball team hosted Region XXI Rival Massasoit Community College on Thursday night. The Knights crushed their division rival by the score of 97-67. The win puts the Knights at 15-9 on the season and 12-3 in Region XXI games.
The Knights came out of the gates scorching hot building an 18-0 lead in the first five minutes. The defense was locking down the Warriors which led to aggressive pushes on offense for the Knights. Jessy Taveras (Cranston, RI) and Adrian La Fleur (Sydney, Australia) each connected on a 3-pointer while Edvaldo Ferreira (Cape Verde) scored a quick eight points including a play where he had an emphatic block on one end and raced down the court for a two hand slam on the other end.
The Warriors finally scored their first bucket six minutes in but the Knights attack was relentless all night. The lead was actually cut to 10 with 10 minutes to go in the half, but La Fleur and Mike DeJesus (Cranston, RI) each connected on two 3-pointers a piece on four straight possessions to push the lead back to 18. The Knights cruised from there finishing the half up by 17, 49-32.
The lead grew quickly in the second half as the Knights went up 73-50 ten minutes into the half. The NBA dunk contest is this Saturday night and some of the Knights put on their own in-game dunk contest as Edvaldo finished off his big night with a powerful drop step dunk and Jordan Grant (New London, CT) caught an alley-oop dunk while also throwing down a tip dunk off a missed shot. Those dunks sent the Knights on a 24-13 run to end the game giving them a 30 point win 97-67.
The Knights played with a lot of energy as a team right from the start. Edvaldo Ferreira was unstoppable all night as he finished with a season high 33 points while hauling in 20 rebounds and blocking 3 shots. The freshman has now put up 19 double-doubles on the season. Adrian La Fleur continued his excellent play as he finished with 18 points, a season high 11 assists and six rebounds. It was his second double-double on the season and sixth straight game with over five assists and fifth straight with double digit points.
Sophomore Jordan Grant finished with 11 points, all in the second half while Jessy Taveras added 11 points as well with three steals. Charlie Brown (Riverside, RI) also scored eight points connecting on two 3-pointers.
Head Coach Rick Harris had this to say on his team’s performance, "Nice division win vs Massasoit to complete the sweep and now we will set our sights on Dean. The young men and I are gaining confidence each day and with each game in our abilities, especially when we have group play and we place emphasis on defense first. Tonight the ball was moving and we played unselfishly. We thought defense first and when we do that we are a very capable team. It is also fun to watch our freshman Edvaldo Ferreira blossom before our eyes. He is an All-American in the making and a pleasure to coach as are all our young men."
