Warwick, R.I. – August 24, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights women’s soccer team traveled to Bel Air, Maryland to take on the No. 12 ranked (NJCAA DI poll) Fighting Owls of Harford Community College. The Lady Knights held off a late charge from the Fighting Owls to win 3-2. With the victory the Lady Knights begin the season 2-0.
The Lady Knights came out strong and scored in just the 14th minute of play when sophomore forward Kyanna Ivey-Jones (Pawtucket, RI) broke through the Harford defense and scored low and to the corner. Fourteen minutes later Ivey-Jones converted again on a beautiful cross from freshman forward Ashley Van Bemmelen (North Providence, RI) giving CCRI a 2-0 advantage at the half.
As the second half began the Lady Knights wasted no time scoring again as sophomore midfielder Catherine Lopes (Warren, RI) converted on a pass from sophomore Co-Captain Kendra Levesque (Warwick, RI) giving CCRI a commanding 3-0 lead.
However, the 12th ranked Fighting Owls never gave up. Harford scored on a free kick from just outside the 18 yard box making the score 3-1. Both teams continued to fight back and forth throughout. With just three minutes remaining in the match Harford struck again as the Owl’s Angela Kuhn scored on a header off of an Abbie Springer corner kick making the score 3-2 putting them right back into the game. However, they would run out of time with the Lady Knights taking home the hard fought 3-2 victory.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be their home opener next Sunday, August 30th at 12noon when they will host Montgomery College, from Montgomery, MD at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln.
