Warwick, R.I. – April 21, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA on Wednesday for a Region XXI league doubleheader.
The Lady Knights defeated the Warriors of Massasoit 18-2 and 12-0. With the two victories the Lady Knights improve 12-8 overall and 5-1 in Region XXI play.
In the circle for the Lady Knights in game one was Bella Malvinni (Westerly, RI) getting her first collegiate start at pitcher. Malvinni notched her first career win throwing five strong innings allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out four batters. After allowing two runs in the first Bella shut out the Warriors for the final four frames to secure the victory. She also helped her own cause at the plate with two hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases.
Offensively the Lady Knights had 16 hits led by Tri-Captain Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) who had four hits an RBI and three runs scored and Maddy Cooper (Pawtucket, RI) who had three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Also putting forth a multi-hit game was sophomore Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) with two hits, three run s scored an RBI and a stolen base and Jenna Beauchamp (Warwick, RI) with two hits, two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. Rounding out the CCRI offense was Tri-Captain Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI), Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI) and Sam Archambault (North Smithfield, RI) who each had a hit apiece. The Lady Knights scored in bunched with six runs in the second inning, seven in the third inning followed by three in the fourth and two in the fifth to win by the final count of 18-2.
In the circle for the Lady Knights in game two was their ace Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, RI) who was dominant over five shutout innings. Sheridan allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out eight of the 18 batters she faced. She also contributed at the plate with two hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Offensively for CCRI in the second game the Lady Knights sprayed 17 hits over five innings to score their 12 runs. The Lady Knights were led by Maddy Cooper with three hits, two RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base and catcher Sam Archambault also had three hits. Tri-Captain Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) had two hits and three runs scored, Jenna Beauchamp added two hits, two RBI and a run scored and Tri-Captain Jess Spargo added two hits and an RBI. Rounding out the Lady Knights’ attack was Bella Malvinni, Kristina Rodriguez and Meg Rousseau who each had a hit apiece.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be this Friday the 22nd when they host the Knights of Northern Essex Community College for a doubleheader on Friday at 3:30pm at Winslow Park in Warwick.
