Warwick, R.I. – March 25, 2015: The CCRI Knights men’s baseball team traveled to Winter Haven, FL for some Spring Training games as part of the annual RussMatt Invitational. In their first game on Wednesday the 18th the Knights faced the No. 2 ranked (NJCAA DIII poll) Generals of Herkimer County Community College from Herkimer, NY. The Knights fell to the very talented Generals 8-0. With the loss the Knights begin the season 0-1.
It was a tough opening day for the Knights. Who lost 8-0 to the 2014 National finalist and currently No. 2 ranked Generals. The Knights seemed to be a bit tired from a full day of travel. However, Head Coach Ken Hopkins commented: “No excuses. It is time to find out who we are. We need to get better every day.”
On the mound for the Knights PJ Watson (Cheshire, CT) took the loss although he only gave up one earned run over three and a third innings while striking out for batters, but five unearned runs sealed his fate. Diego Campos (Providence, RI) came in to relieve Watson and threw three and two thirds innings allowing one earned run, walking one and striking out one and Heiker Feliz (Providence, RI) finished out the game throwing an inning of one run ball while striking out one.
Offensively for the Knights they could only muster two hits one from Dave Hopkins (East Greenwich, RI) and one from James Riley-Garnett (Newport, RI). The Knights’ offense will look to get on track in the next game of this young season.
The Knights have not time to bounce back with a doubleheader versus No. 8 ranked Century College White Bear Lake, MN beginning at 3:30pm on Thursday.
