Warwick, R.I. – March 30, 2014: The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team traveled to Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY on Sunday to play the 5-0 Mustangs of Monroe College for their first games of the season. This was the first action outdoors for the Lady Knights this season. CCRI fell in both game s14-1 and 12-4 to begin the season 0-2.
It was the first action outdoors for the Lady Knights who have been forced to practice indoors with the unseasonable wintery conditions across the Northeast. The field runs showed in the first game but eh Lady Knights showed signs of life in the second game as they led 4-0 before a great comeback by a talented and undefeated Monroe squad.
At the plat for CCRI the only two bright spots were Co-Captain Maxine DeLuise (Warwick, RI) who went 2-2 with a double, run scored and a stolen base and freshman Jessica Spargo (Westerly, RI) who added the lone CCRI RBI. DeLuise singled with two outs in the top of the first and got her second hit, a double, with one out in the top of the fourth. DeLuise then stole third and scored on a RBI fielder’s choice by Spargo.
In the circle Spargo did not fare as well giving up taking the loss in her first collegiate contest but gained valuable experience. Spargo was relieved by Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) in the third inning with no outs and pitched better giving up just three earned runs on four hits striking out two.
In the second game CCRI’s bats came to life starting the top of the first when Co-Captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) singled with one out but was caught stealing. DeLuise doubled with two outs followed by a single by Spargo who advanced to second on the throw. With runners on second and third sophomore Ashley Spear (Harrisville, RI) executed had an excellent RBI bunt squeeze scoring DeLuise. In the top of the second Jen Cicero (West Greenwich, RI) led-off with a single and stole second, freshman Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI) then singled moving Cicero to third. With one out Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) had an RBI fielder’s choice scoring Cicero. In the top of the third DeLuise led-off with a walk followed by a single by Spargo who advanced to second when she took third. DeLuise scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Spear and Spargo capped CCRI scoring on a passed ball.
In the circle Taylor Butler started well but the Mustang bats caught up with her by game’s end. She threw five innings and had a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the third but Monroe got hot at the plate and scored five in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth to end game by mercy rule 12-4.
