Lady Knights Swept by Monroe

Warwick, R.I. – April 20, 2015: the CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, NY for a doubleheader Saturday. The Lady Knights lost two slugfests 10-5 and 14-7. With the losses the Lady Knights record is back to .500 at 4-4.

Game 1: CCRI-5 Monroe- 10

The Lady Knights were trailing 6-0 going into the third and their bats were quiet having only a single from Co-Captain Maxine DeLuise (Warwick, RI) through the first two. Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI) led-off the third with a single followed by a single by freshman Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI). Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) sacrifice bunted the two runners into scoring position and Co-Captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) had an RBI single scoring Fernandez this made the score 6-1 Monroe. The Mustangs added two in the fourth. Ashley Spear (Harrisville, RI) led-off the fourth with a walk, Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) then doubled and Rodriguez added an RBI single and advanced to second. Rousseau then walked to load the bases and Butler stroked a two-RBIs single followed by a DeLuise RBI single this made the score 8-5 Monroe which is as close as CCRI would get eventually lose by the count of 10-5. The Lady Knights offense was led by Taylor Butler, Maxine DeLuise, and Kristina Rodriguez who each had two hits apiece.

In the circle for the Lady Knights was Co-Captain Taylor Butler who took the loss throwing four and two thirds innings she was relieved by freshman Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI) who finished the game throwing the final two and a third innings it was a very tough match-up against a potent line-up.

Game 2: CCRI- 7 Monroe- 14

The Lady Knights got themselves into a hole early once again trailing by three run after the first two innings 8-5 in another slugfest. Monroe extended their lead to as many as nine late in the game CCRI did answer with two more runs to fall by the final count of 14-7.

Leading the offensive attack for CCRI in the second game was freshman Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) with a three-run homerun, two runs scored, three RBIs, and a stolen base and Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI) added two hits including a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Also contributing was Co-Captain Taylor Butler with two hits, Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, RI) with two hits and a run scored and sophomore Rebecca Edwards (North Attleboro, MA) added a double and a runs scored to the Lady Knights’ attack.

Lady Knights scored two runs in the first as Meghan Rousseau led-off with a walk and took second on a passed ball. Taylor Butler singled putting runners on first and third. Butler then got into a rundown which allowed Rousseau to score from third base. Maxine DeLuise walked and took second on a passed ball and later scored on Jess Spargo's RBI single. The Lady Knights scored three runs in the second inning, all with two outs! Jess Brosnahan and Kristina Rodriguez singled then Rousseau connected for her first collegiate Homerun, a three-run bomb to deep left center. CCRI’s bats went quiet again until the 7th inning. Sophomore Rebecca Edwards pinch hit for Jenna Urso and led-off the inning with a double down the left field line. Brosnahan then singled and Rodriguez doubled scoring Edwards while Brosnahan was thrown out at the plate also trying to score. Though CCRI scored two in the seventh they still fell by the final count of 14-7.

In the circle for the Lady Knights Erica Jewett got the start but didn’t have her good stuff and took the loss, walking the first three batters before being relieved by Jess Spargo who threw seven solid innings against a very potent Mustang’s line-up.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be this Thursday when they host the Bulldogs of Dean College for a Region XXI doubleheader beginning at 3:30pm.
