Lady Knights sweep Dean 15-5 and 9-0!

Warwick, R.I. – April 16, 2015: The Lady Knights CCRI softball team traveled to Dean College in Franklin, MA for a Region XXI doubleheader. The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs of Dean 15-5 and 9-0. With the two victories the Lady Knights improve to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in Region XXI play.

Game 1: CCRI- 15 Dean- 5 (six innings by Mercy Rule)

The Lady Knights scored two in the first and five in the second to jump out to a 7-0. In the five-run second Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) led-off being hit by pitch, Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI) bunted and reached on error advancing Jewett to third Rodriguez while advanced to second. Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) walked. Jewett and Rodriguez both scored on passed balls, Co-Captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) walked and Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) hit an RBI single scoring Rousseau. Butler and Urso advance on passed balls. Co-Captain Maxine DeLuise (Warwick, RI) hit a sacrifice fly scoring Butler. Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI) reached on error scoring Urso. The Lady Knights scored one in the fifth and then exploded for seven in the sixth inning to give them a 10-run cushion.

In the circle for the Lady Knights freshman Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI) got the start but lasted just two and a third innings allowing four runs, none earned on two hits walking five and striking out four Bulldog batters to pick up the victory. Spargo was relieved by freshman Erica Jewett who pitched masterfully throwing three and two thirds innings allowing one unearned run walking two and striking out 10 Bulldog batters. Jewett struck out the first four batters she faced, walked two then struck out the next five batters she faced, then a ground out then struck out the last batter to end her impressive outing.

Game 2: CCRI- 9 Dean- 0 (five innings by Mercy Rule)

Once again the Lady Knights had a 7-0 lead by the end of the second inning this time scoring four runs in the first and three in the second inning. CCRI tacked on two more in the fourth before finishing off the Bulldogs in the fifth inning by the mercy rule. In the first, Meghan Rousseau led-off the game with a double Taylor Butler singled and stole second base. Both later scored on passed balls. Jenna Urso walked then Maxine DeLuise singled and stole second, Urso scored on another passed ball. Erica Jewett had RBI sacrifice fly scoring DeLuise. In the second inning Kristina Rodriguez led-off with double, followed by an RBI double from Rousseau who later scored on an error. Jenna Urso also doubled, Jess Spargo reached after third strike passed ball followed by another RBI double from DeLuise scoring Urso. Jewett singled but Spargo was thrown out at third and Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, RI) popped to end inning. The Lady Knights capped the scoring in the fourth with two outs as DeLuise walked Jewett hit a single, followed by an RBI single from Brosnahan and Rebecca Edwards (Attleboro, MA) RBI single.

In the circle for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Taylor Butler pitched very well throwing five strong innings allowing just three hits while striking out seven batters on way to the shutout victory. Butler struck out a batter in very inning with the exception of the fourth but she made-up for that by striking out the side in the fifth inning to end the game.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be Saturday the 18th when they host the very potent Mustangs of Monroe College to Winslow Park in Apponaug for a 1pm doubleheader.
