Lady Knights host CCRI Classic

09.22.13

GreenwoodHaley Greenwood

The CCRI Lady Knights’ volleyball team hosted the CCRI volleyball classic on Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd.  The teams that were there included: New Hampshire Technical Institute from Concord, NH, Fashion Institute of Technology from New York, NY, Holyoke CC from Holyoke, MA, Nassau CC from Garden City, NY, Genesee CC from Batavia NY and CCRI

Match one: CCRI-2 NHTI-1
Set one started off slow with the Lady Knights tired and possibly overconfident. They squeaked out a win 25-21. In set two there was a serious fight from NHTI. The Lynx had gone on a great serving run at the midway point and despite Janny Cabrera's (Providence, RI) six kills, Alyssa Salinas' (Corpus Christi, TX) three kills and Omayra Corchado’ s  (Isabela Puerto Rico) four kills, the errors were to significant and the Lady Knights lost 23-25. Set three showed that CCRI was finally awake. Serving tough with Haley Greenwood (Goldsboro, NC), Alyssa, and Omayra all getting an ace each and the serves constantly kept NHTI out of system so The Lady Knights could run their offense. Cabrera had four kills and Corchado had three kills which led CCRI to a 15-8 win to start-off the tournament.

Match Two: CCRI-0 FIT-2
CCRI had a huge task ahead of us with FIT. The Tigers had only one loss to their season so far which was a 3-2 loss to CCRI’s District rivals Monroe College but our Lady Knights were determined to show everyone that they belong in this caliber of team. They may have lost set one: 23-25 and set two: 22-25. However, the games were intense defensive battles which proved to CCRI that they could fight with the best of them. Cabrera and Chelsea O’Connor (Pawtucket, RI) led the team with nearly perfect passes every time in serve receive. Our 44 digs: 18 from Janny and six from Lindsey Proulx (Cranston, RI) and three blocks helped set up Salinas’ 10 kills .500, Janny's nine kills and Omayra’ s four kills. Unfortunately a few untimely errors were the difference in this match.

Match Three: CCRI-2 Holyoke-0
The girls were not defeated after the loss to FIT but they were a little sluggish at the start of their last match of a long day. They let Holyoke hang around in the first set but after a stern time out by Coach Amaral, the Knights shut the door on Holyoke 25-13. Set two the Lady Knights were 100% in control with Salinas serving 12 straight for 11 points. The Lady Knights cruised to a 25-3 victory. Janny had10 kills hitting at .39%, five Aces, and a Block; Alyssa added five Aces, 2 Assists, and six Digs, while Omayra had four Kills and a Block and Jincy Phann (Cranston, RI) contributed two Kills and six Digs.  They all came up big in the thrashing of Holyoke.

Match Four:  CCRI-1    Nassau-2
After a long day one of volleyball the girls had a huge match against Nassau at 9:00am. The win would have all but guaranteed a playoff spot for either team and although we lost in three the match didn't disappoint in action! Nassau's giant blockers were no match for our high flying Janny and Alyssa smart "one-two" hitting but again a few untimely errors cost CCRI the match with scores of 25-17, 22-25, and 13-15. Key contributors were: Janny with two Aces, 15 Kills, 10 Digs, and four Blocks; Alyssa had 21 Assists, four Kills, and17 Digs, Jincy had two Kills and 16 Digs; Rounding out the Lady Knights’ top performers was Haley who added two Aces while Chelsea had an Ace and five Digs, and Delyn Pizzaro (Homestead, FL) three Kills, two Digs, and 2.5 Blocks.

Match 5:  CCRI-0   Genesee-2
This was a must win for us but unfortunately we were never really in control of this one. CCRI fell to the eventual second place team 17-25 and 17-25. The Lady Knights did put up a fight, even being down by 12 points in game one due to the clutch serving and very scrappy defense from Genesee but it just wasn't enough. Genesee kept CCRI out of system so they couldn't be the offensive force we had been all year.  Janny and Delyn were a force at the net with two blocks for Janny and three for Delyn, Alyssa and Omayra were forces at the service line with  two Aces for Alyssa and one for Omayra. The Defense was strong on our end also with double digit Digs from Janny with 10, Omayra with 10 and Alyssa with 11 but having your setter with 11 digs changes your offense drastically and we couldn't overcome.

Fashion Institute of Technology won the CCRI Classic Invitational defeating Genesee Community College 22-25, 25-21 and 15-13.

Head Coach Sam Amaral commented: “Although we didn't end up with the result we were looking for our players learned a lot about themselves and where we need to be. The coaching staff is very proud of the Lady Knights for never giving up and always fighting to the bitter end. WE no longer need to worry about Heart and Passion with this team. They continue to show us and everyone day in and day out at practices and games. Alyssa Salinas ended the tournament with four double-doubles including: 25 Assists and10 digs vs. NHTI; 21 Assists and17 Digs vs. Nassau; 14 Assists and10 Kills vs. FIT; and 10 Assists and11 Digs vs. Genesee. In addition, Janny Cabrera ended the tournament with a double-double with 15 Kills and 10 Digs vs. Nassau.

The next match for the Lady Knights will be a tournament at NHTI I n concord, NH September 27th -29th where we will be looking to take home the tournament victory.
