The CCRI Knights men's basketball team hosted the Rams of Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) from Springfield, MA for a Region XXI non-league game on Thursday night at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse. The Knights defeated the Rams 80-75 in overtime. With the victory the Knights improve to 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in Region XXI play.
The Knights had a comfortable eight point lead 39-31 by halftime led by Anthony Jernigan's (East Hartford, CT) 14 points and Cody L'Heureux's (North Smithfield, RI) seven points in the first half. In the second half the Knights utilized defensive pressure to extend their lead to 15 points about five minutes into the half. However, the Rams would not go quietly as they surged back to cut the Knights' lead to one point 63-62 with five minutes remaining in regulation. STCC's comeback was spearheaded by Lance Hill who scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half. The Knights extended their lead back to seven points 70-63 with 1:47 left on two free throws from Kevin Marmolejos (Queens, NY). Once again, STCC rallied back with 3-pointer from Kamran Khoshneviss and lay-up by Tayquan Goodman to cut the lead back to two points 70-68 with 1:01 remaining. The Knights had a chance to ice the game but missed two free throws giving STCC the ball back with 15.7 second left. After an STCC timeout they ran a play which was defended pretty well by the Knights but with their over aggressive pursuit the Knights left Goodman open for a mid-range jumper which sunk to tie the game 70-70 with 4.4 seconds left which sent the game into overtime.
The Knights outscored the Rams 10-5 in overtime by making multiple clutch free throws to secure the hard fought 80-75 victory.
The Knights were led by Anthony Jernigan who scored 17 points with six assists, four steals, and four rebounds followed by Cody L'Heureux who added 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Also having a big game for the Knights was Tri-Captain Pat Marchand (Cranston, RI) who scored 11 points with eight rebounds. Rounding out the Knights' top performers was Elijah Okagbare (Atlanta, GA) with seven points with six rebounds and two blocked shots while Kevin Marmolejos, Billy Soriano (Providence, RI) and Malieke Young (Providence, RI) who had six points apiece.
The Next game for the Knights will be a scrimmage versus highly touted Notre Dame Prep on Wednesday the 13th at 7:00pm at home before traveling to New Rochelle, NY to compete in the Monroe College Mustangs Tip-off Classic they will face Tribunes of Monroe Community College from Rochester, NY on Saturday at 2:00pm and on Sunday they will face the hosting Mustangs of Monroe College (time TBA).
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England's largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
