Lady Knights drop two to end Florida trip

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team concluded their spring training trip to the National Training Center in Clermont, FL on Wednesday with a split doubleheader. In their first game, they played Macomb Community College from Clinton, MI and then Penn State-New Kensington from New Kensington, PA in the second. The Lady Knights lost 13-0 to Macomb CC and 9-5 to Penn State. With the losses, the Lady Knights begin the season 0-6 but gained valuable experience they will use for their Regional play back home in New England.

Game 1
CCRI- 0 Macomb- 13

The Lady Knights were a little weary and came out flat on day three and it showed in this game versus Macomb. The Lady Knights only hit of the game came from freshman Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) as she went 1-2 on the day while Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, RI) was the only other base runner who reached via a walk.

On the mound for the Lady Knights Sophomore Sarah Deal (North Kingstown, RI) got the start and pitched two innings giving up five hits and four runs with a strikeout and two walks. Deal was relieved by freshman Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, RI) came in for the third and pitched 1 1/3 innings giving-up eight hits, nine runs, and four walks. Paiva came in during the fourth with one out and pitched to two batters to get the last two outs.

Game 2
CCRI- 5 Penn State-New Kensington- 9

In the second game, Macayla Paiva started and pitched seven innings giving up 15 hits, nine runs, with four walks and struck out one batter.

Offensively for the Lady Knights they scored two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Co-Captain Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI) led-off with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Taylor Butler. Ashley Spear (Harrisville, RI) added a two out double and later scored on a single by Sarah Deal. Paiva and Sam Archambeault (Harrisville, RI) had back-to-back singles to lead-off the second inning and were moved ahead by Amber Boucher (Warwick, RI) with a sacrifice bunt, followed by Place who walked. The Lady Knights scored again when Butler had an RBI single and Co-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI) added an RBI sacrifice fly. Archambeault led-off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a one out RBI double by Place. Rounding out the Lady Knights offensive output was: Spear who had a single, Alexis Jendzejec (West Greenwich, RI) had a double, Boucher had a one out double in the 6th, and Coburn singled in the 7th while Spear added another double.

Once again a nice offensive output from the Lady Knights with 13 hits during the game led by Spear who went 3-4 with two doubles and Co-Captain Place with an RBI double and a triple. Place and Spear were helped by Archambeault who also added two hits including a double while Butler had a hit with two RBIs and Deal and Coburn added a hit and an RBI apiece.

The Next games for the Lady Knights will come this Saturday when they travel to Selden, NY to play the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College for a doubleheader beginning at 12noon.
