The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team completed their play in the ASA Holiday Classic on Sunday by playing the hosting Division I powerhouse Avengers of ASA College. The Lady Knights lost a hard-fought battle with the Avengers 61-52. With the loss CCRI falls to 8-5 on the season.
The Lady Knights had a tough task at hand facing the Avengers who had only lost one game all year and were big, athletic and tough on defense. The Avengers and Lady Knights battled back-and-forth during the first half. CCRI took a four point lead into halftime 26-22 paced by the hot-shooting of Co-Captain Allexia Barros (New Bedford, MA) who scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the first half while making five 3-pointers. In the second half ASA made it a point to deny the ball to Barros and negate her scoring output. However, the Lady Knights and Avengers were locked in battle and it was anyone’s game. ASA took a four point lead 52-48 on a basket by Ekaterina Mikhaylova with 4:44 remaining but back-to back baskets by Ahnyyah Jackson (Hackensack, NJ) and Jesse Ossian (Chandler, AZ) tied the Score at 52-52 with 3:52 remaining in the game. However, ASA made a few key shots down the stretch and CCRI a couple miscues on box-outs down the stretch which helped ASA pull away and score the last nine points of the game to win by the final score of 61-52.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Co-Captain Lexi Barros who had a game-high 19 points including a game-high five 3-pointers with seven rebounds, three assist and three steals. Barros is currently leading the NJCAA in made 3-pointers making 4.2 per game with 55 3-pointers on the season. In fact, she is on pace to set new 3-point standard at CCRI with 118 for her career she needs just 27 to tie the career record on Cassie Novicky (145) and 28 threes to tie Novicky’s single-season record (83) and with 11 regular season games left both of those records are within her reach. Also helping CCRI was Co-Captain Ahnyyah Jackson with 16 points, including three 3-pointers while Jesse Ossian had six points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Amber Edwards (Boston, MA) added six points and team-high nine rebounds and three assists.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be when they host CCRI Invitational Saturday January 11th and 12th. Saturday they will face at Lackawanna College 5pm and Sunday they will face District rival Monroe College at 4:00pm.
