The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College from Boston, MA on Thursday for a Region XXI non-league game. The Knights defeated the Bulldogs 89-69. With the victory the Knights improve to 9-5 overall, 6-2 in Region XXI, and 1-1 in division II Region XXI.
The CCRI Knights had 11 players get into the scoring column and five hit for double-figures as they easily handled the Bulldogs. The Knights had control of the game form the onset even with some early hot long-range shooting for Bunker Hill who sank six first half 3-pointers. Even with the Bulldogs hot shooting the Knight went into the break with a comfortable 43-29 lead. In the second half the Knights quickly extended the lead to 20 points and never looked back in the second half as they pulled away to win by the final score of 89-69. The Knights used aggressive full court pressure to force turnovers and quick shots which led to transition baskets.
Sophomore Co-Captain Pat Marchand (Cranston, RI) led the Knights with 17 points and six rebounds, followed by Sophomore Co-Captain Anthony Henry (Danbury, CT) who contributed 16 points and five boards. Point guard Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, CT) put together a great stat line including a double-double of 15 points and dishing out 10 assists with eight rebounds and five steals. Freshmen Billy Soriano (Providence, RI) had 11 points with three assists and Malieke Young (Providence, RI) added 10 points with two steals.
After the game Coach Rick Harris commented: "This was a nice way to finish the first semester. The team played well defensively and continued to improve offensively. We want to take this momentum into the second half of the season after everyone gets to enjoy a bit of a rest during the holiday break."
The next games for the Knights will be part of the CCRI Holiday Tournament at CCRI Friday and Saturday. Friday they play LaGuardia CC at 7pm and Saturday they will play Westchester CC at 2pm. In addition there will be two more games in the tournament on Friday Gateway CC will face Westchester at 5p and Saturday Gateway will play LaGuardia at 12noon.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
