Lady Knights sweep Dean to take Region!
The CCRI Lady Knights softball team travelled to Dean College’s Longley Field in Franklin, MA Sunday to compete in the best-of-three Region XXI Championship series versus regional rival Bulldogs of Dean College who had just swept them in a doubleheader on Thursday. The Lady Knights played flawlessly and with a tremendous amount of urgency to sweep the Bulldogs 5-0 and 13-2 to win the Region XXI Championship and improve their record to 12-12 overall and 9-3 in Region XXI play. The Lady Knights also advance to the District I Championship and will face No. 6 ranked (NJCAA Division II poll) 24-4 Mercyhurst North East from North East Pennsylvania, the winner of the Region XV Championship.

In the circle for the Lady Knights was freshman Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) was dominant throwing seven shutout innings allowing just four hits, walking none and striking out seven Bulldog batters. At the plate Butler also helped her cause with two hits and a run scored. This game was much closer that the score would indicate with both teams tied 0-0 going into the sixth inning. The Lady Knights were able to score one in the sixth and four in the seventh to secure the game one victory.
The Lady Knights scattered four hits in the first five innings: Butler in the first, Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, RI) in the second, Co-Captain Alex Place in the third and Co-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI) in the fifth. First run scored for the Lady Knights came in the sixth inning as Sarah Deal (North Kingstown, RI) hit one out single, followed by a single from Ashley Spear (Harrisville, RI) and Brosnahan both singled, and Sam Archambeault (Harrisville, RI) scored Deal on an RBI single. The Lady Knights scored four runs scored in the seventh inning, all with two outs! Alex Place singled as did Butler. Deal walked, then Spear hit an RBI single and Brosnahan followed with a 2-RBI single. With a 5-0 lead Butler slammed the door closed the game out with a scoreless seventh to give CCRI hard fought the 5-0 victory.
Overall offensively for CCRI Jess Brosnahan led the way going 3-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a stolen base followed by Ashley Spear with two hits a run scored and a RBI. Also having a big game for CCRI was Co-Captain Alex Place with two hits and a run scored, Sarah Deal with a hit, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base, Sam Archambeault had a hit, an RBI and a stolen base and Co-Captain Liz Coburn added a hit.

In the circle for the Lady Knights was sophomore Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, RI) who threw five strong innings allowing just three earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out one. Pavia threw very well after being spotted 11 runs over the first four innings, she did give up three on an 3-RBI double but the game was well in hand to secure the five inning win by the mercy rule (if a team is eight runs ahead after he fifth game is over).
The Lady Knights offense came out blazing in the second game as CCRI tried to win the series in two games so they would not have to return Tuesday (If game was schedule for Tuesday). CCRI scored twice in the first inning. Taylor Butler singled with one out and advanced to second on passed ball, Ashley Spear hit a two out RBI single followed by a Jess Brosnahan RBI single. In the third inning the Lady Knights exploded for six runs to blow the game open. Sarah Deal led-off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball, Brosnahan had a one out RBI single, then Liz Coburn and Sam Archambeault each singled to load the bases and Amber Boucher cleared the bases with a BIG 3-RBI double. Alex Place singled to score Boucher for an RBI. The inning wasn’t over as Taylor Butler singled and Sarah Deal followed with an RBI single. CCRI scored three more runs scored in the fourth inning when Brosnahan led-off with double, Alexis Jendzejec (West Greenwich, RI) singled and advanced to second on a bad throw, Amber Boucher hit an RBI double. The last hit for the Lady Knights was from Brosnahan who hit her second double of the game in the fifth.
For the game Jess Brosnahan was a perfect 4-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored followed by Amber Boucher with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Also having a big game for the Lady Knights was Sarah Deal with two hits, an RBI and a run scored, Alex Place, Taylor Butler, Liz Coburn, and Alexis Jendzejec each had two hits and a runs scored. Rounding out the CCRI attack was Ashley Spear with a hit, a run scored, and RBI and two stolen bases and Sam Archambeault had a hit and run scored.
The Lady Knights Travel to vineyard Field in North East Pennsylvania to play the No. 6 ranked Saints of Mercyhurst North East for a best-of-three series to decide who will be District I Champion. The District I Champion will also receive a berth in the NJCAA Division II Softball National Championship in Clinton, MS May 14th-17th.
