The CCRI baseball team traveled to New London, CT on Friday to take on Mitchell College’s JV team and used a big top of the sixth inning to come out with an 8-4 win. With the win, the Knights improved to 7-3 on the season.
The Knights blew open a 4-4 tie in the top of the sixth inning with four consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly, pushing their lead to 7-4. CCRI also tacked on a run in the top of the seventh to cap off the scoring.
Jake Tillman (Scituate, RI) led the offensive attack with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Jake Waldren (Phoenix, AZ) continued his clutch hitting with two hits and two RBI and Ryan Wordell (Little Compton, RI) and Jon Vazquez (Bridgeport, CT) chipped in with two hits apiece to pace the 14-hit Knights’ offensive performance.
Evan Bertone (Douglas, MA) got the start for CCRI and pitched a gutty performance, giving up four runs on four hits over four and two thirds innings. He left the game with the score tied at 4. PJ Watson (Cheshire, CT) came on in relief and pitched two and a third innings of shutout ball to pick up the win on the mound for the Knights. With the win, Watson improved his record to 2-0.
The Knights will be back in action at Fell Field on Saturday when they host conference rival UConn Avery Point for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 12:00 p.m. Game two will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
