The CCRI baseball team continued their strong play Tuesday afternoon, defeating Navy Prep by a score of 10-3 in their regular season finale. With the win, the Knights concluded their season with a 21-8 record. Yesterday’s game at Navy Prep was the Knights’ final tune up before hosting UConn-Avery Point this weekend for the Region Championship.
Freshman starting pitcher James Riley-Garnett (Newport, RI) got the start on the mound for the Knights and picked up his first win of the season, throwing five strong innings. “This was Riley-Garnett’s best outing of the season,” head coach Ken Hopkins said. Another freshman, Evan Bertone (Douglas, MA), pitched the remainder of the game and shut the door on Navy.
The Knights’ offensive attack was highlighted by a four-run first inning. That cushion proved to be enough for CCRI, as they never looked back en route to a victory in their last game of the regular season.
Joe Yankee (Lincoln, RI), Ryan Wordell (Little Compton, RI), and Jake Saley (Milford, CT) each had two RBI’s apiece, while Austin Barry (North Kingstown, RI) and Ryan O’Dell (Lincoln, RI) chipped in with an RBI each to close out the scoring.
The Knights will host UConn-Avery Point in a best-of-three series for the New England title beginning this Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Fell Field on the Knight Campus.
