Rough first day at Nationals for Knights’ tennis
The CCRI Knights’ tennis team is competing at the Division III National Tournament at Collin College in Plano, TX. The Knights only managed one win out of the nine they played on Monday to give them two points and put them tied for fifth out of eight teams at the championship. Bergen community College is in first place with eight point followed by Brookdale, Nassau and Oxford, all with six points and CCRI, Gloucester, Onondaga and SUNY-Adirondack are all tied for fifth with two points each.
The highlight of the day for the Knights came in Second Doubles when the team of Ross Bouchard (South Kingstown, RI) and Tim Holzinger (Foster, RI) defeated Alex Day and Nick Moore from Oxford College (GA) 6-4 and 6-1 giving the Knights two team points.
In First Singles John Chammat (Cumberland, RI) lost to No. 1 seed Maclane Smoke from Brookdale CC (NJ) 6-0 and 6-1. In Second Singles Otniel Lopes (Pawtucket, RI) lost to Carlos Munoz from Bergen CC (NJ) 6-0 and 6-3. In Third Singles Ross Bouchard lost to Kyle Fligel from Bergen CC 6-2 and 6-3. In Fourth Singles Sean Gorman (Wakefield, RI) fell to Nick Moore from Oxford College (GA) 6-4 and 6-4. In Fifth Singles Tim Holzinger fell to No. 2 seed Eric Sapiro from Bergen CC (NJ) 2-6, 6-0 and 6-1. In the Sixth Singles, Eddie Papineau (Scituate, RI) lost to Roger Hunt from Oxford College (GA) 7-6 (9-7), 4-6 and 6-3 in the closest match of the day for the Knights. Rounding out the Day for the Knights were the other two doubles matches. In First Doubles Chammat and Gorman fell Mike Perrone and Donovan Vassalotti from Gloucester County CC (NJ) 6-4 and 6-2. Finally, in Third Doubles Lopes and Papineau lost to Mike Mares and Matt Schrader from Onondaga CC (NY) 6-1 and 7-5.
The Second Doubles team of Tim Holzinger and Ross Bouchard are still alive in the main draw and will face the No. 2 seeded team of Ezio Cesere and Carlos Munoz from Bergen CC at 12noon EST Tuesday in the National semi-finals. All of the other Knights’ competitors are still alive in the back draw. In First Singles Chammat will face Gustavo Linde from Oxford and in Fifth Singles Holzinger will face Cody McCann from SUNY-Adirondack both are back draw quarter finals at 9:00am EST. Advancing to back draw Semi-finals are Otniel Lopes, Bouchard and Sean Gorman and are waiting to see whom their opponents will be at 1:30pm EST. In doubles the First Doubles Team of Chammat and Gorman will face Elliot Dunn and Andy Parlow from Onondaga in the back draw Quarter Finals. In third doubles the team of Lopes and Papineau are in the back draw semi-finals awaiting their opponent and will play at 1:30pm EST.
