Knights’ Golfers win second straight Region XXI title!

The CCRI golf team traveled to Chicopee Country Club in Chicopee, MA to compete in the Region XXI Division III Golf Championship on Monday and Tuesday. Chicopee CC is the home course of both Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) and Holyoke Community College. The tournament featured 18 participants from five Region XXI community colleges.  The Schools were CCRI, who joined STCC and Holyoke CC along with Mass Bay Community College, and Dean College.  

As a team the Knights won the championship with a two-day total of 649, defeating the second place team Holyoke CC by 100 strokes who scored a team total of 749 and 257 strokes over STCC who finished with a  team total of 906. Head Coach Brian Deighan described the victory as “A total team effort.”  Holyoke Community College’s Thomas Hutchings was the medalist (Individual Champion) shooting a two-day total of 152 with an impressive 79 on Monday and two over par 73 on Tuesday defeating last year’s medalist Anthony Lovechio (Wakefield, RI) of CCRI by four strokes who finish second with a 156 shooting a 79 day one and 77 on day two. The other CCRI competitors finished as follows: Pat O’Connor (North Kingstown, RI) was fourth with a 158 shooting a 77 and 81 , Nick DeSalvo (Burrillville, RI) was seventh with a 168 shooting an 87 and 81  , Gina Bartolotta (Wakefield, RI) was eighth shooting a 169 with an 82 and 87 and Zach Sullivan (Cumberland, RI) was ninth with a 172 shooting an 85 and 87. The CCRI two day team average of 324.5. Coach Deighan added “If we shoot like this we could be a top 10 team at nationals.” Springfield Tech’s Head Coach Gary Mullett who has been coaching STCC for 30 years also commented "Our region has sent teams over the years with strong one, two and three players but he doesn't recall a team that went five deep like CCRI's team this year.”
 
Besides winning their second consecutive Region XXI title in convincing fashion, the Knights also earned further accolades with Anthony Lovechio and Patrick O’Connor earning All-Region XXI honors and Head Coach Brian Deighan was named Region XXI Coach of the Year.
 
The Knights now gear-up for the NJCAA Division III National Tournament to be held at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, NY June 4th-June 7th.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
