03.09.13: The CCRI Knights men’s baseball team traveled to Erie, Pa to open their season versus the Lakers of Mercyhurst North East for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Knights lost both ends of the doubleheader in two pitcher’s duels 2-1 and 1-0. With the two losses the Knights begin the season 0-2
CCRI-1 Mercyhurst NE- 2
The Knights traveled to Mercyhurst Northeast of Erie, PA, for a rematch with the Lakers, last year’s opponent in the Eastern Championships. Unfortunately for the team, the bats were silent and the defending Eastern Champions dropped an opening day doubleheader. Great pitching and solid defense couldn't help the Knights as the bats were silent in the double header.
Knights’ sophomore Connor Gleason (North Stonington, CT) opened on the mound for CCRI, pitching three solid innings giving up one unearned run while walking three and striking out three. He gave up only one hit in his debut for the 2013 season. Rob West (East Windsor, CT) came on in relief and was the tough luck loser in the bottom of the tenth inning. He took over in the fourth inning and was pitching a perfect game through nineteen hitters before giving up a one out triple and a two out walk-off single as the Knights fell 2-1.
The Knights’ offense could only muster four hits with Jake Saley (Trumbull, CT) leading-off the top of the sixth inning with a triple and Jake Tillman (Johnston, RI) followed Saley with an RBI single to tie the game. Joe Yankee (Lincoln, RI) and Jonathon Vasquez (Bridgeport, CT) picked up the only other hits for the Knights.
CCRI- 0 Mercyhurst NE- 1
Game two was eerily similar to game one as the Knights received another brilliant pitching and defensive performance but could only muster up three scratch singles in a 1-0 loss.
Keegan Dellacona (Hyannis, MA) was a hard-luck loser in his CCRI debut as he gave up only one run and three hits over four innings while striking out two Mercyhurst batters. The bullpen came on to silence the Lakers bats but CCRI could not put together a string of hits to score some runs.
Offensively, Freshman Jonathon Vasquez had a double in the second inning, Freshman Joe Yankee added another single in the sixth inning, and Freshman Zack Wood (Jewett City, CT) was stranded on second base after a two out double in the top of the seventh.
Head Coach Ken Hopkins commented on the pitching and defense for the Knights saying they were: "Excellent and give us plenty of optimism for the remainder of the season. Once the bats come around, the Knights should be a solid team again in hopes of repeating their Eastern title."
The Knights play Mercyhurst again on Sunday at 12noon and hope to finish their opening weekend with their first victory.
