Brown named Head Coach of Lady Knights!

The Community College of Rhode Island has promoted assistant coach Brittany Brown to Head Coach for the upcoming 2013-14 basketball season.  Earlier this month, former Head Coach, Kate Lynch accepted the Head Coach position at NCAA Division II Molloy College in Rockville Center, NY.  This will be Brown’s third year as a coach for the Lady Knights as she moves to the position of Head Coach.  Before joining CCRI, she spent the 2010-11 season in her native Michigan (Flint) as a member of the Flint Monarchs, a nationally ranked semi-professional basketball team.
 
Brown is no stranger to community college basketball. She played for two years at Labette Community College in Parsons, Kan., a Division I school. In 2007 and 2008, she was named an All-Conference and All-Region player. In 2006-07, she led the team in scoring with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists per game while scoring over 1,000 points in here two years at Labette.

After two years at Labette, Brown earned a scholarship to play for Florida Gulf Coast University, another Division I institution. She was part of winning team that compiled a 50-12 record over two seasons. The team was the two-time regular season Atlantic Sun champions and qualified for the Women’s National Tournament (WNIT) in 2008-09 and 2009-10. In 2010 she finished the season ranked 7th in 3-point field goal percentage (.368) in the A-Sun Conference (both years), made two WNIT appearances. After Brittany graduated there she played semi-pro In Flint, MI with the Flint Monarchs, ranked 8th in the nation, and Shot 52% from the 3-point field. This past year Brittany played with a semi pro team in Boston, MA Boston Bombers. Brown graduated from FGCU in 2010 with a degree in communications and a minor in journalism. She resides in Coventry.
 
CCRI Director of Athletics Joe Pavone commented on the hiring of Brown: “Brittany is an exceptional coach with desire and energy. She will make the transition smooth and seamless with her CCRI coaching and Division I player background.  What a wonderful role model for our women's basketball program.”

The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
