Fun for all at Seventh Annual CCRI Special Olympics Day!
The CCRI Knight and Lady Knights basketball teams hosted the Lions of Nassau Community College for a doubleheader on Saturday January the 26th. The Knights and Lady Knights were both victorious in their games with the Lady Knights winning 114-50 and the Knights 83-69. However, it was another event that happened that day that made everyone a winner which was the seventh annual CCRI basketball Special Olympics Day at the Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.
Since 2007 the CCRI men’s and women’s basketball programs have been hosting athletes for the Rhode Island Special Olympics basketball program. This year CCRI hosted four teams who played in two games. The first game was at halftime of the women’s game featured the Woonsocket Wolverines vs. The East Bay Avalanche. There was a second game in between the women’s and men’s game between another Wolverines squad versus the Avatars. Both games were very exciting and had the crowd cheering for all of the athletes. In addition, all of the Knights’ and Lady Knights’ basketball players were also on hand to watch so the day was a special one for everyone involved. The day was culminated with a medal ceremony for all the Special Olympians during halftime of the men’s game versus Nassau Community College where each participant received a medal.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
