Knights’ tennis falls twice over weekend

The CCRI tennis team competed in two matches over the weekend beginning on Friday when they played Suffolk County Community College from Selden, NY and continuing Saturday when they played Mercer County Community College from Trenton, NJ.  Both matches were played at Durfee High School in Fall River, MA.  On Friday the Knights lost to Suffolk County CC 8-1 and on Saturday they lost to Mercer County CC 5-4 in a very close match. With the two losses the Knights fall to 2-5 on the season.
 
Friday
CCRI-1 Suffolk County CC- 8
CCRI did not fare well versus Suffolk.  The only Knight to record a victory versus Suffolk was Sean Gorman (South Kingstown, RI) in Fourth Singles who defeated Mike Guccarda 6-4 and 6-4.  In third Singles the Knights won a game with Ross Bouchard (South Kingstown, RI) ultimately falling to Chad Stevens 6-1, 4-6, and 0-1. The Knights also got a game in Sixth Singles with Eddie Papineau (Scituate, RI) falling to Dave Hahn 2-6, 6-4, and 0-1.  But in First Singles John Chammat (Cumberland, RI) fell to Scott Lagerbach 6-0 and 6-2. In Second Singles Otniel Lopes (Pawtucket, RI) feel to Steve Williams 6-1 and 6-4.  In Fifth Singles Tim Holzinger (Foster, RI) fell to Billy Fisher 6-3 and 6-2.
 
In Doubles the team of First team of Chammat and Bouchard fell to Lagerbach and Williams 8-4.  In Second Doubles Lopes and Gorman fell to Stevens and Guccarda 8-6 and in Third Doubles Holzinger and Papineau fell to Girande and Hahn 8-6.
 
Saturday
CCRI-4 Mercer County CC-5
This was a back-and-forth match with every game playing a role in the final outcome of the match.  In First Doubles the team of John Chammat and Ross Bouchard fell to Ahmed Al Shawafi and Yasser Forid 8-5.  In Second Doubles the Knights got on the scoreboard with Otniel Lopes and Sean Gorman dominating Dairo Moriello and David Chavijo 8-1.  But in Third Doubles Tim Holzinger and Eddie Papineau fell to Kirill Lebedew and Elias Deleon 8-5.
 
In Singles the Knights fared better but could not pull-off the comeback.  In First Singles Chammat fell to Al Shawafi 6-4 and 6-3.  In Second Singles the Knights got a point back with Lopes defeated Forid 6-4 and 7-5.  In Third Singles Bouchard fell to Moriello 6-3 and 6-3.  But in Fourth and Fifth Singles the Knights battled back with: Gorman defeating Chavijo 3-6, 6-3 and 1-0 and Holzinger defeating Greiff 6-2 and 6-1.  Which brought the match down to the final singles game to decide the match, but Papineau fell to Deleon 4-6 and 1-6.           
              
The Knights are back in action Wednesday when they will travel to Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA to play the Bees in a Region XXI showdown beginning at 3:30pm.
