Lady Knights sweep Northeastern
The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the huskies of Northeastern University club team for a Doubleheader on Saturday. The Lady Knights defeated the huskies 9-1 and 3-0. With the two victories the Lady Knights improve to 12-12 on the season. In addition, CCRI Softball celebrated its Sophomore Day for its six sophomores playing in the final home games as Lady Knights. The sophomores were: Tri-Captain Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI), Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI), Katie Paddock (Providence, RI), Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI), Kyrie Craig (Warwick, RI), and Dara Patton (Cranston, RI).
CCRI- 9 Northeastern- 1 in five innings by the Mercy Rule
On the mound for the Lady Knights Katie Paddock put together another excellent performance throwing five strong innings allowing just one unearned run on three hits, walking one and striking out four Northeastern batters. Paddock was in complete control the entire game as she only allowed the unearned run in the second inning but the Lady Knights already had a comfortable 5-1 lead at the point. The Lady Knights added three more runs in the third and closed the game out in the fifth when Kate Fowler drew a bases-loaded walk to win the game 9-1 in five innings by the Mercy Rule.
The Lady Knights were led offensively by lead-off batter Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI) who went 2-2 with a single, a double, two walks, two stolen bases, three RBIs and two runs scored. Place was helped by Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca who had three hits, and RBI and two runs scored and Tri-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI) added two hits, a single and a double with an RBI and a run scored. Also helping the CCRI attack was Kate Fowler with a hit, a walk, a sacrifice, two RBIs and a run scored and Kyrie Craig added a single and a run scored. The Lady Knights scored four times in the first inning, tacked on one more in the second. With three more in the third inning, and nobody scored in the fourth and the capped the game with the winning run in the seventh on the Fowler walk.
CCRI-3 Northeastern- 0
Sophomore Dara Patton got the start for the Lady Knights and pitched brilliantly in a very close game to help the Lady Knights pull-off the doubleheader sweep. Patton threw a complete game shutout scattering five hits over seven innings walking none and striking gout one Northeastern batter. In addition, at the plate, Patton also went 2-3 with two singles and an RBI clearly her best day both on the mound and at the plate while playing at CCRI.
The sophomores really led the way on Sophomore Day as also charting two hits for the game was sophomore Mel Iadeluca who was 2-2, two singles, an RBI and a sacrifice. The other Lady Knights’ sophomore output came from Kate Fowler, Izzy MarcAurele and Katie Paddock who each added a single and a run scored.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be in the Region XXI Championship this weekend April 27th and 28th when they will travel to Brockton, MA to play the No. 1 seed Warriors of Massasoit Community College. The Championship will be a best-of-three format with the first two games being played Saturday at 12noon and 2:00pm with the IF game (if the split both games on Saturday) being played Sunday at 2:00pm.
