03.30.13: The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled to Franklin, MA to play the Bulldogs of Dean College for a Region XXI league doubleheader on Saturday. The Knights split the doubleheader winning the first game 9-1 but falling in the second game 7-5. With the split the Knights record is now 9-7 overall and 3-2 in Region XXI play.
CCRI- 9 Dean- 1
Knights’ ace Connor Gleason (North Stonington, CT) turned in another brilliant performance as he pitched six innings while giving up one run with three walks and an impressive 10 strikeouts for his second win of the season. Gleason gave way to freshman Shane Johnson (Warwick, RI) who came on in the seventh inning to close the door by striking out the side.
The Knights broke open a one to one tie in the top of the sixth inning by scoring eight runs on four hits and two walks to win their fifth consecutive game. Joe Yankee (Lincoln, RI) led the Knights’ offensive attack with two hits and three RBIs including a towering double off the top of the centerfield fence to help break the game open in the sixth inning. Co-Captain Nick Coro (North Providence, RI) also contributed a two run double in the sixth to give the Knights the lead and they never looked back. Ryan O’Dell (Lincoln, RI) continued his hot hitting as he also chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.
Dean- 7 CCRI- 5
The Dean Bulldogs broke open a five to five tie with two runs on two wild pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning to hand the Knights their first loss in the last six games. CCRI broke out on top with two runs in the top of the first inning on singles by Dylan Gracia (Middletown, RI), Joe Yankee, Ryan O’Dell, and Zack Wood (Jewett City, CT). The lead didn’t hold up for long as freshman pitcher Keegan Dellacona (Hyannis, MA) ran into some control problems and gave up one run in the first and three more in the second innings as the Knights fell behind. The offense once again provided the spark and CCRI came up with three runs on a single by Jonathan Vasquez (Bridgeport, CT), followed by an RBI double by Dylan Gracia. After a walk to Co-Captain Mike Sherburne (North Kingstown, RI), Joe Yankee connected with a two RBI double to right center to give the Knights a 5-4 lead. Matt Laferierre (Coventry, RI) pitched two scoreless innings but the rest of the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead as Dean scored three unanswered runs over the final two innings to pick up the conference win.
The Knights are back in action Thursday April 4th when they will host the Naval Academy Preparatory School for a game beginning at 4:00pm.
