Warwick, R.I. – September 29, 2011: The No. 12 ranked (National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll) CCRI Women’s Soccer team traveled to Holyoke, MA on Wednesday to play the No.2 ranked (National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll) Cougars of Holyoke Community College.  The Lady Knights defeated the Cougars 1-0.  With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 8-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in Region XXI play.

It took the Lady Knights a while to get in gear as the game began giving Holyoke a few scoring opportunities from in close but they failed to capitalize.  As the half continued on both teams had their chances but could not convert on their opportunities.  With seven minutes left in the first half CCRI was awarded a corner kick.  Kicker Caitlin McGarry (Warwick, RI) spotted a sprinting fullback Brittany Croll (Warwick, RI) for another scoring opportunity which they converted.  McGarry passed to Croll on a designed corner kick play as the Cougars seemed to fall asleep.  The pass to Croll gave her a better shooting angle at the goal and she powered a perfect shot high and up into the far upper 90 degree corner of the Holyoke net giving the Lady Knights a 1-0 advantage.  Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented on the play “Our players executed the play beautifully. We go over these types of designed set plays at practice and our players know what to do in certain situations.  Today they took advantage and made the most of their opportunity.”

As the second began the Cougars came out strong and hard but the Lady Knights were able to hold off their attacks.  Both teams had scoring opportunities but were again unsuccessful.  A little more than midway through the second half the Cougars began to look a bit tired. “We are always preaching to our players the importance of fitness and stamina in the game of soccer and we are pleased with their efforts today.  Their hard work at practice paid off today. ” commented Coach Grassini.  The Lady Knights were able to keep the Cougars off the board for the rest of the game coming away with the 1-0 victory.  Freshman Goalkeeper Kelsey Viens (North Attleboro, MA) played well and was very much in command throughout the entire match notching her fourth shutout victory in a row. The Lady Knights have outscored their opponents 44 to six in nine games thus far on the season.

Coach Grassini added “This is a good solid win for us today.  Holyoke is always a formidable opponent and they had some really skilled and talented players. Caitlin McGarry picked up her team leading 11th assist and the CCRI defense was outstanding in the victory.”

The Lady Knights next match will be at home in Lincoln on Saturday October 1 as they host the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex (CCBC-Essex) from Maryland at 2:00pm.
