Lady Knights' cruise past Dean 7-1!
The CCRI women’s soccer team traveled to Longley Field in Franklin, MA to play Dean College on Monday for a Region XXI showdown. The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs 7-1. The Lady Knights secured their fourth straight victory to improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Region XXI play.
It didn’t take long for CCRI to get rolling as Freshman Forward #7 Caitlyn McGarry(left) (Warwick, RI) took a pass from Freshman Midfielder Kayla Resendes (Cumberland, RI) and rocketed a 30-yard shot from the right side into the upper left corner of the goal past Dean Goalkeeper Jessica Gelbman giving the Lady Knights the 1-0 lead. That goal set the tone for the match as the Lady Knights dominated the Bulldogs throughout. Just six minutes later freshman forward Jessica McCaughey (Warwick, RI) scored on a pass from Sophomore Tri-Captain Lauren Saritelli (Coventry, RI). About 10 minutes later Resendes scored the Lady Knights third goal on a pass from Freshman Midfielder Jessica Sandin (Warwick, RI) giving CCRI a commanding 3-0 advantage. One of the few times that the Bulldogs were able to penetrate the CCRI defense they slipped in a slow rolling shot on a miscommunication between a CCRI defender and goalkeeper Taylor Maurath (Burrillville, RI) making the score 3-1. However, it didn’t take CCRI long to recover as Tri-Captain Saritelli scored an unassisted goal on a beautiful individual run as she dribbled her way into the Dean defensive zone and parked a beautiful and powerful shot high into the goal giving the Lady Knights a 4-1 lead. With just five minutes left in the first half, freshman forward Tori Tomassi (Westerly, RI) scored on a pass freshman midfielder Cassie Tasich (Wakefield, RI) giving CCRI a commanding 5-1 halftime advantage.
As the second half of play started, the Lady Knights continued to dominate and were able to find the back of the Bulldog’s net as Jessica Sandin scored on a pass from Tri-Captain Becca D’Andrea (Cumberland, RI) making the score 6-1. Just a few minutes later Caitlyn McGarry was set up for her second goal of the afternoon by D’Andrea. With a 7-1 advantage CCRI continued to dominate the play throughout the rest of the match.
Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game, “Our team played really well today as they knew what was at stake…They were on a mission! They really passed the ball well and found the open person all day long. I think the most gratifying accomplishments we’ve made as a team thus far is that we are getting diversified scoring from a lot of different people. We don’t have to rely on any one individual to score goals which is great!”
Leading scorers for the match were Kayla Resendes, Lauren Saritelli, and Jessica Sandin each registering a goal and an assist. Freshman Caitlyn McGarry scored twice and Rebecca D’Andrea tallied two assists. Both CCRI goalkeepers, Taylor Maurath and Kelsey Viens (North Attleboro, MA) each played a half. The Lady Knights next match will be this Saturday, September 17th as they travel to Rochester, NY to match up against District rival Monroe Community College at 1:00pm..
