Knights hold-off Holyoke 4-2!
The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team hosted the cougars of Holyoke Community College from Holyoke, MA on Tuesday. The Knights defeated the Cougars 4-2. With the victory the Knights improve to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in Region XXI play.
In the Knights’ pre-game meeting Head Coach Gabe Toro demanded that the Knights come out hungry to score three goals in the first 25 minutes. The players responded and were able to score three goals in 28 minutes. First goal was set up by Jerson Gomes (Pawtucket, RI) as he found Tri-Captain Emmanuel Ridore (Warwick, RI) with a through pass. Ridore was patient with the ball and was able to place the shot into the lower corner. Brian Rego (Rehoboth, MA) tallied the second goal making the score 2-0. In the 28th minute Jerson Gomes took a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box hitting the cross bar allowing John Natareno (Providence, RI) to head it back into the net, 3-0 Knights. The Knights became complacent making a mental mistake in the middle giving Holyoke late first half goal, cutting the Knights’ lead to 3-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the Knights Michael Keegan (East Greenwich, RI) brought down a Holyoke player in the box, resulting in a penalty kick which they converted making the score 3-2 Knights. Michael Gomes (Cumberland, RI) made the most of his time coming off the bench for The Knights. Late in the game he was able to dribble his way into the 18-yard box on two separate occasions, which resulted in penalty kicks for the Knights within the last minute of play. Manny Alves (Pawtucket, RI) missed the first penalty kick attempt after he slipped on the muddy field and the ball went wide left. Holyoke recovered quickly to spark a counter-attack which tricked wide left of the Knights net with just 18 seconds left. Knights’ back-up goalkeeper Brian Rego who started at midfielder then later relieved Mario Barrientos(Providence, RI) in net sent the ball back into the Cougars’ end where Michael Gomes was able to dribble at great speed into the box again and was brought down by a Holyoke defender with 10 seconds left. Michael Keegan redeemed himself by taking the penalty kick and scoring the final goal of the day making the score 4-2 sealing the victory for the Knights.
Head Coach Gabe Toro commented after the game “Mario (Barrientos) did a very good job anchoring the defense. Because of an injury we had to utilize the back-up keeper Brian Rego who also played well in net and scored early in the game when he played form the midfield position, helping the Knights on both ends of the field.”
The Knights next game will be Thursday when they travel to Manchester, CT to play the Cougars of Manchester CC at 4:00pm.
