Knights Beat Ben Franklin 3-1 for First Win!
The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team welcomed Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology from Boston, MA to the CCRI soccer complex located on the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln campus for a 3:00pm kick-off. The Knights defeated the Shockers of Ben Franklin 3-1. With the victory the Knights improve to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in Region XXI play.
Head Coach Gabe Toro and his squad came ready to play and unleashed a new formation against the Shockers. The Knights coaching staff prepared the new formation over the weekend in order to optimize the use of the personnel currently on the team. The Knights played with more midfield players pushing Emmanuel Ridore(Warwick, RI) up top as the only true striker on the team. The strategy worked and the Knights’ coaching staff was very happy with the new system. Eight minutes into the game, Ridore was able to open up the back line of the defense, as he dribbled into the 18-yard box. The only way the visitors could stop him was to pull him down, resulting in a penalty kick for the Knights. Freshman Captain Manny Alves (Pawtucket, RI) took the penalty and was able to slot the ball into the lower corner to put the Knights up 1-0. The second goal for the Knights came when Christopher Lopes (Pawtucket, RI) made a run forward into the offensive third. Lopes played an excellent defensive game as a stopper also showed his explosive speed up top as he went by defenders in the 18-yard box to get loose and strike a ball with authority past the Benjamin Franklin goaltender to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half the Knights continued to pressure Ben Franklin and were able to get another score. Mario Barrientos (Providence, RI) buried the ball in the back of the net after a nice cross from Jerson Gomes(Pawtucket, RI) making the score 3-0 Knights. CCRI made a mental mistake at the end of the game, allowing for the Shockers to spoil a possible first shutout for Knights’ Goalkeeper Zack Caron (Seekonk, MA) making the final score 3-1. Coach Toro commented “Zack played a great game and continues to be very consistent in the net.”
The Knight travel to Rochester, NY this Saturday the 24th to play Monroe Community College at 2:00pm.
