Knights Downed by Dean 6-3
The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team hosted the Bulldogs of Dean College in Lincoln Monday in a Region XXI showdown. The Knights lost to the Bulldogs 6-3. With the loss the Knights fall to 0-2 on the season.
Knights’ Coach Gabe Toro looked to play hard today against a very physical Dean squad. The Knights were not able to get into a rhythm early in the game. However, Dean did and broke out to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman Forward Michael Gomes (Cumberland, RI) was able to score a diving header to get the Knights on the scoreboard cutting the lead to 2-1 Dean. But he Bulldogs scored three more times to take a 5-1 lead. Dean College then scored an own goal as the Knights applied constant pressure to their half of the field to make the score 5-2. Dean added one more score to go up 6-2. Later Michael Gomes came back to score a nice second goal, as he dribbled by a few defenders in the box before slotting the ball into the net making the score 6-3. The three goals were not enough for the Knights as they ultimately fell 6-3. The Knights missed several opportunities to tie the game and the referee awarded Dean College two penalty kicks. The Knights were not able to overcome the Bulldogs and the penalty kicks, leading them to their second defeat of the season. Zack Caron (Seekonk, MA) had another good game today. The Knights defense needs some fine tuning and the players need to learn to begin to trust each other and work together to play smarted and not harder.
Head Coach Gabe Toro commented after the game “I believe that we are on the right path to success if we can stay positive and continue to work hard on the training ground.”
The Knights next game will be versus Massasoit Community College this Wednesday in Brockton, MA at 4:00pm.
