No. 13 ranked Lady Knights blank STCC 6-0!
September 26, 2011: The No. 13 ranked (by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America) CCRI Lady Knights women’s soccer team traveled to Springfield, MA to take on the Rams of Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). The Lady Knights posted their third shutout victory in a row defeating STCC 6-0. With the victory CCRI improves to 7-1 on the season and 5-0 in Region XXI play.
With four starters out while nursing injuries the Lady Knights leading scorer, freshman midfielder Jessica Sandin(Warwick, RI), scored her eighth goal of the season off of a corner kick delivered by freshman forward Caitlyn McGarry (Warwick, RI) just four minutes into the game. Ten minutes later sophomore Tri-Captain Becca D’Andrea(Cumberland, RI) scored an unassisted goal from 18-yards out as she placed a high shot over the Ram goalkeeper’s head giving CCRI a quick 2-0 advantage. The Lady Knights dominated throughout the rest of the first half but failed to capitalize settling for the 2-0 halftime advantage.
As the second half began CCRI continued to press the STCC defense. In the fifth minute of play Jessica Sandin scored her second goal of the game on another assist from freshman forward Caitlin McGarry. Sandin connected for her team-leading ninth goal on a volley shot off of another McGarry corner kick. The Knights continued to pressure the Ram’s all over the field as sophomore Tri-Captain Lauren Saritelli (Coventry, RI) scored assisted by Becca D’Andrea giving CCRI a commanding 4-0 lead. Followed by freshman forward Tori Tomassi (Westerly, RI) who scored on a rebound from a McGarry shot giving McGarry her third assist of the contest. The assist gives Caitlyn a team-leading 10 assists on the season. Rounding out the scoring was freshman midfielder Jessica McCaughey (Warwick, RI) assisted byD’Andrea giving the Lady Knights a 6-0 victory.
Defensively freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Viens (North Attleboro, MA) picked up her third consecutive shutout victory, only giving up a single goal in six contests. Offensively Jessica Sandin picked up two goals on the day while Caitlin McGarry tallied three assists and Becca D’Andrea added a goal and two assists.
The Lady Knights (7-1) next game will be this Wednesday September 28th when they travel to Holyoke to face No. 2 ranked (by the National Junior College Athletic Association) Holyoke Community College (7-0) at 4:00pm.
