Lady Knights Shut Out Dean 2-0!
The No 12 ranked (National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll) hosted Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College on Wednesday for their final regular season game. The Lady Knights defeated Dean College 2-0 to improve to 14-2 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in Region XXI play while capturing the program’s 11th consecutive Region XXI title.
Although CCRI dominated the match right from the start they had trouble getting on the board until freshman midfielder Kayla Resendes(Cumberland, RI) scored with 13 minutes remaining in the half on a nice header off of a corner kick by freshman Cassie Tasich(Wakefield, RI). The half ended with the Lady Knights leading 1-0.
As the second half of play began the Lady Knights picked up right where they left off totally dominating the Bulldogs in every facet of the game. In the 6th minute of play CCRI was awarded a penalty kick as Jess McCaughey(Warwick, RI) was fouled and taken down in the 18 yard box area. The Lady Knights’ leading scorer, freshman forward Caitlin McGarry(Warwick, RI) converted giving CCRI a 2-0 advantage. CCRI continued to dominate the match but they still could not find the net hitting several crossbars and many other near misses. Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the match; “We had so many scoring opportunities but we just couldn’t seem to finish. It was quite frustrating to watch. We certainly did not make the most of our opportunities today but we’ll take the win and move on. Coach Bannan and I are proud of this group as they have worked very hard all season long. Now they must refocus themselves as we head to the District tournament next week.”
Freshman forward Caitlin McGarry, the team’s leading scorer ends the regular season with 10 goals and 14 assists for 34 total points. Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Maurath (Burrillville, RI) picked up the shutout victory having to make only two saves. The program has not lost a Region XXI game in over 10 years going 73-0 in region since 2002. The team now prepares and sets its sites on the District Tournament which begins in New Jersey on November 4th as they will probably faceoff against District rival Monroe Community College from Rochester, NY.
