Lady Knights Defeat Mercer 4-1!
The No.12 ranked (National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll) CCRI Lady Knights’ women’s soccer team hosted the Vikings of Mercer County Community College on Saturday. The Lady Knights defeated the Vikings 4-1. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 11-2 on the season. It was the Lady Knight’s “Pink out” game for breast cancer awareness as all players and coaches were donned in pink for the day and raised money for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Field conditions were not ideal due to multiple days of heavy rain making playing conditions for both squads quite sloppy. However, that did not stop the Lady Knights as they got on the board within the first two minutes as freshman midfielder Kayla Resendes (Cumberland, RI) converted on a pass from freshman forward Caitlin McGarry (Warwick, RI). Resendes’ shot went right along the ground and into the far corner of the net beating the Mercer goalkeeper in a very muddy goal crease. Nine minutes later Resendes returned the favor setting up McGarry giving CCRI a 2-0 advantage. However, the Vikings wouldn’t give up as they capitalized on a few CCRI mistakes resulting in a corner kick for Mercer. The Viking’s Megan Constance put up a beautiful corner that was headed into the CCRI goal by Nicole Tafrow cutting the Lady Knight’s lead in half ending the first half of play at 2-1.
In the second half CCRI pressured the Viking’s pinning them in their own defensive end. In the fourth minute of play a CCRI forward was fouled and taken down in the box area awarding the Lady Knights with a penalty kick. Caitlin McGarry took the kick and converted a low shot into the far left corner giving CCRI a two goal cushion once again with a 3-1 advantage. Two minutes later McGarry struck again on a pass from freshman midfielder Jessica Sandin(Warwick, RI) giving CCRI a commanding 4-1 lead. It was McGarry’s third goal of the contest giving her a natural hat trick (three goals) on the day. As play resumed the Lady Knights continued to play defense as well as pepper the Mercer goal missing on numerous chances. Caitlin McGarry was the star of the game figuring in on all four of CCRI’s goals with help from Kayla Resendes who chipped in with a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Viens (North Attleboro, MA) picked up her eighth win of the season.
Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game: “Coach Bannan and I were pleased with our team’s overall effort today in terrible field conditions for both teams. We were pleased with their efforts coming out in the second half and turning things up a couple of notches in putting Mercer away. We have been preaching that they must play a full 90 minutes and they did that today.”
The Lady Knights’ next game will be against Region XXI foe Shockers of Bunker Hill Community College this Tuesday the 18th at 3:30pm at the CCRI soccer complex in in Lincoln.
