Warwick, R.I. – June 6, 2011: On Tuesday June 7th WJAR channel 10 will feature two former CCRI Lady Knights’ basketball players along with Head Coach Kate Lynch on the “Tuesday’s Child” segment. The segment will air Tuesday June 7th at 12noon and 6pm and will also be viewable on the WJAR website: http://www2.turnto10.com/ all month long.
Former Lady Knights’ basketball Co-Captains Cassie Novicky (New Milford, CT) and Alysa O’Neill (Johnston, RI) and Coach Lynch in conjunction with WJAR and Adoption Rhode Island hosted young Madelissa, or “Maddy” as her friends call her, for a shoot around as part of WJAR’s Tuesday’s Child segment. Maddy is a 15-year old looking for a family to adopt her and one of her passions is basketball so she wanted to play with some of the top players from Rhode Island. She got her chance as she took the court with some of the CCRI Lady Knights who were the 2010-11 Region XXI Champions. Maddy had a great time at her shoot around as did the CCRI players and hopes that this segment will find her a family. Please take the opportunity to watch the segment on Tuesday June 7th at 12noon and 6pm or on-line.

Warwick, R.I. – June 2, 2011: The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released their Division II Softball All-American selections late Wednesday evening. The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team received good news with freshman catcher Ashley Olson (Coventry, R.I.) selected as a Third Team All-American.
Olson made a huge impact in her freshman campaign for the Lady Knights. The 2011 squad, which was ranked No. 3 in the nation in Team Batting Average with a .408 mark, was lead by Olson on offense. She shattered the single season hit record with 62 hits in 117 at bats, surpassing Steph Morse who previously set the record with 59 hits in 2010.
Olson ended the year ranked No. 3 by the NJCAA in hitting, and her 62 hits included 15 doubles (which tied another CCRI record held by Steph Morse and Nicole Kufel set in 2010) while adding four triples and eight home runs. She also was ranked nationally in On Base Percentage (OBP) at No. 20 with a .532 mark and No. 49 in home runs with eight.
Olson became the team’s single-season RBI leader with 62 RBIs, again breaking a record held by Morse (50 RBIs, 2010). The achievement also ranked her No. 18 in RBIs by the NJCAA.
Head Coach Liz Afonso said, “I am very happy for Ashley. She works hard every day and is a leader both on and off the field, which is why we named her a freshman captain in the beginning of the year. She has lived up to that potential in her first collegiate season as a force both offensively and defensively, getting key hits and RBIs while doing a great job catching and negating opponents running games with her rocket arm and quick release. Ashley will be a big part of our success next year.”
