As part of All College Week 2013, CCRI gives back to the community during Community Service Day.
Community Service Day
6854 Post Road
Since 1998, the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation has been working to bring an aircraft carrier to Narragansett Bay as a world-class family attraction, education center and museum. Until two years ago, its focus was on the USS Saratoga. The Navy then decided to scrap Saratoga, but made the USS John F Kennedy available instead. The Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame manages the effort to bring the aircraft carrier USS John F Kennedy to Rhode Island.
On Community Service Day, volunteers will move boxes and sort through equipment, supplies, artifacts and other material and help the organization decide what to keep and what it might sell or give away. Other duties that day include organizing shipping and office supplies.
Some volunteers will go to the nearby R.I. Aviation Hall of Fame, which has acquired and restored a Korean War-era F9F Panther jet fighter – the same type of plane that Red Sox great Ted Williams flew during the Korean War. This plane will be the centerpiece of a satellite Ted Williams Museum in Rhode Island, fully supported by the Red Sox. The organization exhibits the plane in parades around the state to generate support and visibility for the USS JFK project. Volunteers will clean and polish the airplane and paint and add required striping to the trailer it sits on.
